It starts at Eugênio Jardim Square and ends at Epitácio Pessoa Avenue, at Cantagalo Section, an exit to Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. Its first name was Cantagalo Avenue.

Henrique de Toledo Dodsworth Filho, a Brazilian Physician and Professor was born and died in Rio de Janeiro (1895-1975). He was a teacher at Colégio Pedro II (Pedro II School) and Escola Normal (Teaching High School); he was Mayor of the Federal District. During his administration he realized the opening of Cantagalo Section to the Lagoon in 1916.
He was a Physician and an Attorney, studied medicine and laws at the same time, graduating in 1915 (Laws) and 1916 (Medicine). After graduating, he still dedicated his time to mastership, teaching in high schools and colleges. |

In 1919, he was designated to be the Cabinet Officer of the Mayor of the Federal District, Paulo de Frontin, his uncle. Got elected as a Federal Representative in 1924, he got reelected in 1927, finishing his charge in 1930.
In 1932, he gave support to the Movimento Constitucionalista, inflamed in São Paulo against the President Getúlio Vargas. In 1933, he was the most voted “carioca” candidate to the National Representative Assembly by the “Partido Economista” (Economist Faction) of the Federal District, winning again a place at the Federal Council in 1934. On October 1935, he got reelected again, but that time to the Ordinary Legislature which started in 1935. |
In July, 1937 he became the Interventionist of the Federal District substituting the resigning Cônego Olímpio de Melo. Supported by sections of the Autonomist Faction, his nomination intended to get the alliance of the political forces of the Federal District that supported the candidature of José Américo de Almeida, officially sponsored by the Federal Government. He supported the introduction of the “Estado Novo” in November of that year being in charge of Interventionist in all the dictatorial period.
During his management he increased the City Hall incomes due to the improvement of the tax collection system, so, leading the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, he is remembered by great works like “Jardim de Allah” (Allah Garden), “Parque da Gávea” (Gávea Park) and the “City Zoo”; the opening and paving of Brasil Avenue and Presidente Vargas Avenue, the urbanization of many downtown areas like the “Passeio Público”. Besides, he created the “Banco da Prefeitura do Distrito Federal”, later called “Banco do Estado da Guanabara”, the beginning of the “Maracanã” and the “Estrada Grajaú-Jacarepaguá”.

In 1945, with the democratization of the country, he enrolled to the Partido Social Democrático, a faction created by the political force of the ex Interventionists and other authorities of the “Estado Novo”. Still in 1945, he was nominated the Brazilian ambassador in Portugal, being in charge for only a few months.
During the next years, he occupied second step charges of Eurico Gaspar Dutra government, as well as at the administration of the Federal District. In the last years of his life he renounced his political career to dedicate exclusively to his private business.
He died in 1975 in Rio de Janeiro.
