
The sidewalk of Copacabana beach is made of a black and white mosaic (basalt and limy)
that makes draws of waves in perpendicular way.
Main Avenue from Copacabana which borders all the beach, began to be built in 1906, after the conclusion of the Túnel Novo (New Tunnel) works. It was destroyed continuous times by the flux and reflux of the sea and duplicated in 1914. |

In 1922 Atlântica Avenue was crossed by the revolted people from the Copacabana Fortification marching against 4000 soldiers of the government.

The mutineers intended to make an amend because of the prision of the Marshal Hermes da Fonseca ordered by the President Epitácio Pessoa. In the beginning, they were about 300, but almost all of them gave up, remaining only 19, where 18 were soldiers and among them were the Lieutenant Eduardo Gomes, Siqueira Campos, Newton Prado and Mário Carpenter. From this episode comes the term "Tenentismo". There is a statue at the corner of Siqueira Campos street in honor to the Dezoito do Forte (Eighteen of the Fortification), how they became known. The only one who wasn´t a soldier was the engineer Otávio Corrêa. |

In 1923 was magnificently inaugurated the Copacabana Palace Hotel, that time considerated the most sumptuous building of South America and one of the most beautiful of the world. At Atlântica Avenue appeared too the two first Casinos of the city, which was the capital of the Republic, making of Copacabana an international district. In April 30th, 1946 the President Eurico Gaspar Dutra banished the Casinos of the country. |

O Globo newspaper published in January 29th, 1954:
"Since 1935, when the Casino Atlântico was inaugurated, the Posto 06 in Copacabana have been one of the most animated Carnival of the Capital. Nowadays modificated to be the AABB (Associação Atlética Banco do Brasil, a sports club) seat, the building that is in the corner of the Avenida Atlântica and
Francisco Otaviano street keeps the tradition of the most joyful carnival. The last two weeks, it has been realized in the nightclub the balls called "Sassaricadas" (from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.) which will continue all Saturdays until Carnival. |

In March 24th, 1954 "O Globo" published:
"Lacerda and Aranha´s son fought
It began with an alteration followed by a fight of Mr. Euclides Aranha and the journalist Carlos Lacerda; an incident that lasted until midnight, resulting in a traffic jam in the Avenue and the interdition of the place by police authorities disturbing last night the dinner at "Bife de Ouro", the Copacabana Palace Hotel restaurant. At the same table were sit togheter the minister João Cleophas, the Delegate Edilberto Ribeiro, Mr. Manuel Ferreira and Carlos Lacerda, the Principal of the "Tribuna da Imprensa" newspaper. At another table, Mr. Euclides Aranha, son of Minister Oswaldo Aranha who was dining with his wife, stood up with an upset expression in his face, went to the table of the group, stopped near the chair of the journalist and asked about what was written in the newspaper about his father. After that, rude words were said and the journalist stood up punching the minister´s son. According to the witnesses, both punched each other by some minutes and then, some friends separated them. At 23:00 Oswaldo Aranha attended to see what happened. Few minutes later, at the same time and by different doors Mr. Euclides Aranha and Mr. Carlos Lacerda went away from the restaurant."
